Christmas Market in Gdansk

Gdansk Christmas Market

Although not as known as its counterpart in Berlin, Christmas Market in Gdansk is getting more and more popular in recent years. It’s smaller and less crowded than St. Dominics Fair that takes place during summer but still attracts citizens and tourists to the city centre. This year Christmas Market starts on the 23rd of November and lasts until the 1st of January. Contrary to Dominikanski Fair, which is spread all over the Main and Old Town, Christmas Market is mainly concentrated around Targ Weglowy and Wyzynna Gate. Also, New Year’s  Eve for children will be celebrated here.

Below we present the map of Gdansk Christmas Fair in 2019:

Gdansk Christmas Market is the first and only Polish Fair that has been nominated for “European Best Christmas Market”. If you want to help it win, vote for it at www.christmas.ebdest.in until 10th of December

Main attractions of the Christmas Market

Advent Gate with Calendar

This is the first time 5 meters high, Advent candle holder shaped gate will be presented at the Fair. Every day at 17 one of the Gate windows will be opened exposing Christmas gift.

Handicraft and craft market

Christmas Market will be packed with entertainment and craft. In the Grand Armoury, craftsmen will present their products until the 22nd of December. Those will include not only some local and Christmas ornaments but also products made of recycled materials and some considered to be slow fashioned. If you are still looking for a Christmas gift from Poland, it’s a good place to look for one.

Santa Claus Magic Sleigh

There is a VR Santa Claus Sleigh simulator in Elfs’ house that will offer a voyage over most beautiful cities of the World.

Angel’s Mill

Outside, you may expect lots of illuminations, and in the centre of the fair: Angels’ Mill. This is a wooden construction decorated with Angels and Saints, serving as beverage stall where you can try mulled wine. You may also buy a jug here – a small amount from each jug sold will help to maintain St. Nicolas church. Angels’ Mill is supposed to be turning around, but it won’t the only construction that will be turning around. The other one will be the carousel with a capacity of 78 people.

Gdansk Christmas Market will be started with Gingerbread Parade on 23rd of November. Santa Claus will take over the place on 6th of December, but you will find more figures meanwhile. All of them children friendly and willing to pose, and Lucek the Moose even to speak and joke. Gdansk and its partners have also prepared workshops for children – those include – among others – preparing ornaments, singing and pottery. You will find the complete programme of the fair below.

Food court

But Christmas Market is not only about shopping and entertainment. A food court will work until 1st of January, where snacks from all over Europe may be tasted, including Spanish churros, Hungarian Langos and German Bratwurst. Of course, there will be some Polish and Kashubian food and drinks (hot wine!) as well, to warm you up in the cold evening.
